Ash cloud from Sangay volcano observed at 6.7 km altitude, Ecuador

An ash cloud from Sangay volcano in Ecuador was observed at 6.7 km (22 000 feet) altitude on September 23, 2026, at 16:10 UTC, according to the Washington Volcanic Ash Advisory Center (VAAC). The ash cloud was reported moving west to west-southwest from the summit at about 35 km/h (25 mph).

The advisory was based on GOES-19 satellite data, VONA reports, webcam imagery, and numerical weather prediction models. The Washington VAAC forecast the ash cloud movement toward the west to west-southwest at the same altitude through the next 18 hours before dispersion. Volcanic activity was described as low in the remarks. No Aviation Color Code was stated in the advisory.
