Ash cloud from Sangay volcano observed at 7.0 km, Ecuador
An ash cloud from Sangay volcano in Ecuador was observed at 7.0 km (23 000 feet) altitude at 18:00 UTC on September 19, 2026. The Washington Volcanic Ash Advisory Center (VAAC) issued the advisory following reports from the volcano observatory and detection by satellite and remote-sensing systems.
Satellite imagery showed ash fanning out southwest from the summit, confirmed by GOES-19, VONA reports, and a VOLCAT alert. Numerical weather prediction models indicated general south-southwest movement of the ash through the next six hours at the same altitude. No Aviation Color Code was stated in the advisory.
