Ash cloud from Popocatépetl volcano reaches 6.1 km, Mexico

An ash cloud from Popocatépetl volcano in Mexico was observed at 6.1 km (20 000 feet) altitude at 19:01 UTC on August 15, 2026, according to the Washington Volcanic Ash Advisory Center (VAAC). The ash was detected moving southwest of the summit based on satellite and webcam data.

The advisory incorporated information from GOES-19 satellite imagery, local webcam observations, and numerical weather prediction models. The model forecast indicated that winds at the observed altitude were expected to shift to come more from the east over the following six hours. No Aviation Color Code was stated in the advisory.

Popocatépetl is a large stratovolcano located in central Mexico, situated southeast of Mexico City.
